There are many ways of working with animals. This course provides experience of working with and caring for a range of animals. Some of the practical activities take place at Wakefield College’s animal unit, supported by basic background theory, but there will also be visits and field trips to access a larger variety of animals. There are progression opportunities onto a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care at Wakefield College.

What you will Study The course is made up of 7 Units delivered over 1 year These are made up of: • Practical experience of handling, feeding, accommodating and caring for a range of animals • Learning skills to work in the animal care industry including teamwork, completion of tasks using the correct equipment and independence and intuitive when working with animals • Understanding terminology relating to classifying animals Introduction to wildlife Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
How you will Learn You will learn by building up skills, professional techniques and knowledge by working in a realistic animal care environment that includes a range of small mammals and exotic animals. You will work on your own as well as in a group, developing your independent study skills. Class based lessons will give you a full understanding of the theory of working with animals and expand your knowledge for assessments. During the course of the academic year, you will be involved in relevant visits, locally and nationally.
How you will be Assessed There is an online, multiple choice test for one of the units while the remaining units will have observed or written assessments. These could be in the form of posters, leaflets, completing assignment tasks or answering questions.

Fee Information Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students. Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course.
