The Civil Engineering sector is vast, ranging from the construction and design of roads and bridges, the rail network, utilities, coastal and flood defences, to name but a few areas. Civil Engineers can be consulting engineers who design and advise on projects or they can be contracting engineers who are involved in the construction of the projects. This course is aimed at individuals looking to be employed within the civil engineering sector in roles associated with design or management of roads and bridges, railways and buildings. This course will enable individuals to progress to Higher Education to study civil engineering related courses or into employment within the sector. The units selected for study facilitate progression to both full-time HE and employment. All learners are provided with the opportunity of a short work placement.

If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
How you will Learn The course is delivered over the two years in four elements. Each element constitutes a qualification, culminating at the end of the two years in the Extended Diploma. The aim of the course is not only to extend the theoretical knowledge of the industry but also to introduce skills required for the workplace. Delivery is carried out traditionally in the classroom through formal and informal sessions, including practical and resource-based learning activities with tutorial back up. Working with employers, we aim to study local projects which help to extend the learning environment beyond the College premises. In addition to visits to live construction sites and other places of interest, a two week work placement is introduced at the start of Year 2.
