"Enhance your existing knowledge and skills and take a holistic approach to support the psychosocial wellbeing of your patients"

As well as physical problems, diabetes creates psychosocial issues for patients, their families and health care professionals. An individualised diabetes management plan should aim to achieve a balanced life in addition to the medical requirements of living with diabetes. Psychosocial issues such as depression and other emotional problems should be approached holistically, emphasising patient empowerment and shared decision making in diabetes management.

If you’re interested in improving the psychosocial care of adults or children with diabetes, you’ll benefit from this course. During the module, you’ll enhance your existing knowledge and skills in supporting your patients' psychosocial wellbeing based on current evidence-based interventions.

Self-care management issues, life transition problems, psychosocial assessment and therapeutic approaches will be explored and linked to the latest guidelines. This module can be taken alone or as part of MSc Diabetes Care course.

You will learn how to:

  • Critically demonstrate your understanding of diabetes guidelines and their implications to psychosocial services.
  • Critically synthesise and evaluate the evidence base regarding treatment and patient management options by promoting self-care and informed decision.
  • Effectively manage psychosocial issues experienced by diabetes patients in your work setting.
  • Consistently evaluate your personal and professional diabetes competencies in initiating and enhancing the quality and standards of diabetes care.
