This course places you at the heart of the family. You’ll develop public health skills while specialising in providing support for children and families at household, school and population level. You’ll focus on preventing ill-health, improving health and reducing health inequalities.

Our innovative one-year course will develop your skills in evidence-based public health practice, topping up your existing nursing or midwifery qualifications to a specialist honours degree. You’ll divide your time between Anglia Ruskin and practice placements as you learn to specialise in family based public health nursing within the community.

When you graduate, you’ll be able to work as a school nurse or health visitor, or to specialise in other aspects of public health. You’ll also be able to register to prescribe from the community practitioners' formulary.

The course is divided equally between theory and practice, so you’ll learn both in Anglia Ruskin and in the workplace. It has been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and meets their professional standards for Part-3 registration.

Your practice placements will teach you the art and skill of health visiting or school nursing. These placements may range from one to five days per week throughout the course, and you’ll have the support of experienced practice teachers. At the end of the course, you’ll draw together everything you’re learned by doing a full-time ten-week placement, working with a case load under the supervision of a practice teacher.

Throughout the course, you’ll have the support and guidance of our helpful and friendly lecturers and tutors. You’ll use innovative learning methods such as our Virtual Learning Environment. This lets you learn flexibly from a distance and at any time, and means you’ll need access to a computer and the internet.
