Experience one of the most highly rated and sought-after courses in our Executive MBA curriculum, in a new non-degree online format that is now open for enrollment.

Presented by two of the world's most knowledgeable and recognized economists, nobel laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz and finance expert Bruce C. Greenwald, Globalization (Online): Strategies for Your Enterprise provides new, in-depth views that give you a true understanding of how globalization impacts us and our world at large.

In this online program, the Columbia Business School professors importantly debunk pervasive myths of globalization and provide unique insight into how to consider challenges and opportunities – both macro- and micro-economic – more accurately. With an immense amount of wisdom accumulated from their academic and professional experiences, the professors infuse this material with humor and honesty as they share their different perspectives. This course further provides frameworks that you can use to guide your business strategy and investment decisions to more profitability in the midst of globalization.

Recent years have seen markedly closer integration of countries around the world, with increased flows of goods and services, capital, and knowledge. There are alternative views concerning globalization. One, reflected in the protest marches from Seattle to Genoa, argues that globalization has hurt the poor, has been bad for the environment, and is governed by undemocratic institutions operating behind closed doors, advancing corporate and financial interests of the more developed countries. The other argues that globalization is the only means by which developing countries will be able to grow and eradicate poverty. A third view presented here challenges widespread beliefs about globalization being an overwhelming, irresistible, undifferentiated force and presents some more thoughtful specific considerations and strategies.

This program consists of 14 modules, listed below, over seven weeks, with two modules per week. Each week contains, on average, approximately two hours of material as well as a discussion board to exchange ideas and takeaways with fellow participants.

  • Module 1: Introduction: Globalization and the Rise of Developing Countries
  • Module 2: History of Globalization
  • Module 3: The Business Perspective: Market Structure, Competitive Advantage, and Globalization
  • Module 4: Productivity Growth, Outsourcing, Economic Performance, and Labor Markets
  • Module 5: Policy, Structural, and Macro Issues
  • Module 6: Effect of Globalization on Labor Markets
  • Module 7: The Global Environment
  • Module 8: Trade, Inequality and Labor Markets
  • Module 9: Inequality and Labor Markets
  • Module 10: Intellectual Property Rights and Globalization
  • Module 11: Introduction to Financial Markets, the Global Financial System, and Globalization
  • Module 12: Global Macro-Stability and the Current Crisis
  • Module 13: The Euro Crisis
  • Module 14: Globalization, Markets & Changing Economic Landscape

Each module is divided into several manageable parts that combine pre-recorded video lectures and interviews as well as supplemental slides and case studies.

Cases are designed to illustrate the methodologies and concepts, with an emphasis on being able to apply them directly to real-world business situations.

During this program, you will have access to the following:

- Over 16 hours of video content, including:

  • 6 case studies led by Bruce Greenwald, which all echo themes from his well-known classes on Value Investing and the Economics of Strategic Behavior
  • The professors, both lecturing individually and side-by-side, commenting on each other's ideas and perspectives
  • Sessions of the professors responding extemporaneously to a variety of student questions in informal Q&A
  • One-on-one interviews with each professor that highlight key takeaways from the lectures and cases (exclusive to this Executive Education program!)
  • Closed-captioning during all primary videos

-The capacity to pause, rewind, and replay these lectures. The material is dense in areas, and as many professors and alumni can attest, being able to review one lecture a few times really instills the material in a way live viewing can't. Watch the lessons that are most relevant to you at your own pace and as many times as you like

-A weekly discussion board to communicate thoughts and ideas with a diverse group of peers in the online class, moderated by a fellow alumni facilitator, who was the teaching assistant for the live version of this Executive MBA class-Select class slides to help facilitate viewing and take-aways to provide extra back-up data for the lectures and diagrams that highlight Professor Greenwald's strategy teachings
