The objective of this course is to present the tools used in several control design techniques allowing to include some features like uncertainties, nonlinearities and switching behaviors present in a great number of practical problems. After recalling and completing basic properties of linear models, the main principles of Lyapunov stability theory are quickly introduced. In many cases, the conditions associated with the control law design problems can be formulated or translated into Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI) feasibility problems or LMI optimization problems which can be solved by efficient and effective numerical procedures. Among the main tools used to obtain such formulations, Schur complement and S-procedure presented in this course, have a crucial and important role. Some examples borrowed from analysis and control of uncertain or nonlinear systems are developed to show the potential of such techniques. Generalities about hybrid systems are also introduced and the case of a special class of switched systems, the one associated to power converter models is particularly studied. All the concepts are illustrated through homework’s and classroom exercises developed with the help of MATLAB software.
