Fundamentals of Nanosciencie and Engineering for Advanced Nano - Enabled Treatment Technologies

What is nanoscience and nanotechnology? How can structures that are 10,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair be created? What kind of nanostructures are being developed to remediate the contamination of our environment? How can we "see" at the nano-scale? How is it possible to use such tiny things to create an impact? In this course you will obtain a rich understanding of nanotechnology fundamentals, the capabilities of nanotechnology tools, and how to use laboratory instruments for nano-scale fabrication, characterization, and to develop and understanding of the fate and transport of nanomaterials. The nanoscale is considered the next frontier where designs become reality to solve problems our society faces today. We will introduce you to the fundamental and practical knowledge, skills, and tools that can use to turn your nanotechnology ideas into physical form and that will enable you to develop nano-scale solutions.

This course is designed to introduce senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as industry professionals to nano-scale materials and their potential environmental implications. Nanomaterial synthesis and modification for applications have progressed to a great extent in the last decades. Manipulation of the physicochemical properties of a material at the nanoscale has been extensively performed to produce materials for novel applications. Controlling the size, shape, surface functionality, etc. has been key to successful implementation of nanomaterials in multidimensional usage for environmental engineering applications, electronics, optical imaging, biomedicine, drug delivery and green energy-related technology.
